1) Why did you join the "Strega" Pirate Ship?
Our crops of olives were scarce that year due to drought, and the Duke's men came for collection we could only give them 20 barrels of oil instead of 40 as required. They accused us of helping pirates, an accusation punishable by death. However, they said they would overlook it if I gave myself to them freely. My husband grabbed the sword and slashed a man, I scooped my baby out of his basket and ran, stopping briefly to see bloodied body of my husband slumping to the ground. People hid me for weeks, and put me in contact with pirates. The hardest thing was leaving my boy behind, never knowing if I'll see him again.
2) What were you thinking when the original Captain Sirena picked you to take over her ship when she died?
I didn't know what to think other that my captain is dying. The fact didn't sink in for a long time afterwards, but the whole time I thought it a mistake that will be corrected soon, so better not get used to idea.
3) Did you think that the crew would accept you as the new Captain Sirena?
Never. They're a bunch of though wenches who required a very firm hand which I didn't know I had at the time.
4) How did you feel about Marko Lucin when you first met him?
Suspicious, but not of him. Of the tingly sensation his presence evoke inside me. You see, after my husband's death I denied myself to feel anything.
5) Did you think that you would be able to trust Marko Lucin?
Not on my life. I was a pirate with a hefty prize on my head and anyone out there could come after me.
At first I took for a player, which he was no denying. But every time he glanced at me there was something in his eyes that made my insides quiver. It was a whole new sensation I didn't grasp, and as hard as I fought it, it only grew stronger.
7) What were you thinking when the "Strega" was being attacked by Gaspar and his men?
By the sheer number of our enemy, I knew this was the end and many would get killed, but even that was better than to rot in the Duke's dungeons.
8) Did you ever think that you and your Quartermaster Marta would ever be saved from being executed to death?
No, I made my peace with the death and didn't resist it. It was easier to accept it.
9) Were you surprised to see Marko Lucin after waking up from your illness?
Of course, I thought I was dead and in heaven. Or hell, my final destination wasn't clear since my pirates did good deeds for common folk yet unfortunately, we killed innocent to achieve our goals.
10) Did you ever think that you would be reunited with your son?
No, he was a baby when I left him behind and I thought he'd be better off with his adoptive family. They loved him as one of theirs. He had many siblings and he was happy. And it was a blessing in disguise to find Marko on that desolated islet. Sometimes taking chances can change one's life.
Carmen Ventura is a young beautiful woman with long black curly hair and grey eyes. She had joined the Strega ship under the command of Captain Sirena, the legendary pirate. Most people think that she was a myth created to scare the children. Carmen was appointed to be the new Captain Sirena, when the original Captain Sirena passed away. Carmen is a strong woman who knows how to fight and can handle anything that comes her way. Her first mission is to go find a “treasure chest” that the original Captain Sirena had hidden some where.
On her way to Ragusa, Captain Sirena met Marko Lucin who was stranded on an island. He was the Captain of a ship that was recently attacked. She took him on board the Strega as a guest. Marko Lucin is a young handsome man and he is also looking for this treasure chest that he has heard about. There adventures on the high seas have just begun.
Through out the whole story, Captain Sirena and Marko Lucin have been through a lot together and they have a love/hate attraction for each other. As I was reading, I can picture all the scenes from the book in my mind. I felt like I was also on the Strega with them. I have enjoyed reading and seeing the journey of Captain Sirena and Marko Lucin from their eyes.
Zrinka Jelic has done an amazing job writing Treasured Chest. Her writing shows that she has done her research. She described and explained what it was really like back then during the pirate time. Treasure Chest has lots of adventure, love and tragedy in it. The characters Carmen Ventura/Captain Sirena and Marko Lucin are awesome. She did a great job bringing them together and showing us their love for each other.

Review
Treasured Chest by Zrinka Jelic is a historical romance book! At first, it did take me awhile to get into it, but once I got past the first chapter of the book I was hooked. This is the first time I have read a book about a woman, who is a pirate and became a Captain of a ship with a crew of women on it. It is very interesting and it made me want to read more of the book.
