Interview:
What's your connection to the characters of the story?
Each character in Fair Play is a resident of the city of Orlando, Florida where I grew up. Each one of the characters has been affected by or directly involved in the case against Jasper Davis a suspected child rapist and murderer. When I see a gross miscarriage of justice, like the Casey Anthony case that was one of the impetuses behind my writing this book, I get angry. The characters in Fair Play are angry that Davis is about to be acquitted because one policeman, in an effort to find a missing girl entered without cause.
Davis’ lawyer, Doug Lipton struggles between doing what is right, keeping a murderer off the streets and doing his job. I want justice for the victim, but I believe in a fair trial for the accused. When Lipton takes advantage of a technicality, as many attorneys have done, the guilty go free. Paul Friedman is the detective investigating a series of kidnappings and a murder linked to the case. It was his partner, Glenn Kelley who caused the mistrial. The antagonist is a man who calls himself Justice who begins to set in motion a plan to teach the legal system a lesson. I feel a connection to all these characters because as is in real life, what is right doesn’t always happen. It’s hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys because sometimes we have to do distasteful things to provide for our families, and sometimes those things come back and haunt us. If I had to pick one character I connected with the most, it would be Lipton.
If you were to have your book made into a movie who would play the starring roles?
Blurb
Detective Paul Friedman awakes to a disturbing phone call from his former partner. Officer Glenn Kelley has been abducted. Or, has he? Kelley's mistake during an arrest may have guaranteed the release of child molester and murderer Jasper Davis. Friedman races against time to prove that his friend and partner did not take the law into his own hands. Doug Lipton is the defense attorney who aids in getting Jasper Davis acquitted and finds himself at the mercy of a madman calling himself Justice. Fair Play is set in the city of Orlando, Florida and is a fast paced mystery thriller that will force the reader to ask, "Who is the real villain?"
Excerpt
“Up close, he was able to see the life flow out of his victim, able to see his last breath. He opened his victim’s eyelids and watched as the pupils expanded for the last time, pulling in the last light he would ever see. He could see his reflection in those dying eyes. This war he was in now was a different kind of war. And he was a different kind of soldier. He was fighting a war for justice, what more noble pursuit was there?”
