Lethal Obsession by Shandra Miller

Book blurb – what the story’s about.

Angela Martin is like everyone else. She wants acceptance. Love. Passion.

For five years she’s lived with the pain of knowing her husband cheats on her. She’s dealt with the heart-rending rejection by rebuilding her life around her work, becoming the first woman detective in the history of the Moose Creek, N.C., police department.

Then she stumbles upon him. A man who reawakens desire, who makes her feel more alive than she believed possible by pulling her into a world of bondage and dominance, devotion and trust taken to a new level, fear mingling with desire, a craving stronger than any drug.

Soon women start turning up dead in Moose Creek, bound and tortured, tied in ways that Angela finds startling familiar. Angela’s heart tells her that her newfound love cannot be the killer, her detective instincts tell her otherwise, and her obsession with this new lifestyle draws her back to him, even at the risk of her life.

LETHAL OBSESSION is a tale of sex and bondage, love and fear, desire and suspicion, with an ending that will leave you breathless, craving more.

LETHAL OBSESSION EXCERPT

It was late Friday afternoon when Angela walked into the chief’s office. Two days had passed since the second victim was found, since Angela had blacked out and fallen onto the body. For those two days Angela had been off the case, on mandatory sick leave until Chief Suggs was satisfied she was fit for duty. He had arranged for a full physical the day after her blackout, and called her in this afternoon to discuss the findings.

Or so she thought.

“Chief,” she said as she stepped through the open doorway.

“Close the door Angela.”

Fear welled in the pit of her stomach. This can’t be good. She did as he asked, then took a seat when he motioned her toward a chair. The chief leaned over his desk, pulled a paper from a file folder and looked at it. From the back Angela could tell it was a picture of some sort.

“Buddy of mine at the state lab called me a little while ago,” he said.

“He find something important?” Angela fought to keep her voice steady.

“You tell me.” He put the photograph on the desktop and pushed it toward Angela. She didn’t pick it up – even viewing the photograph upside down, she knew what it was at first glance – a still shot taken from a surveillance camera. A picture of Angela, slipping from a hotel room, the time stamp showing she exited the second-floor room on the back side of the Moose Creek Motor Inn at the same time her colleagues were surveying the latest murder scene – on the first floor of the front side of the same hotel. Angela’s body turned cold, her skin clammy. Her mind was blank.

“Can you explain this?”

Angela opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Her heart hammered inside her chest, and she focused on that, on slowing her pulse. Her mind refused to address the photo. They sat in silence for several minutes.

“Detective, I’m going to need an explanation.”

Angela slumped in her chair. “I…I don’t know what to say.”

“Start with telling me why you were caught on this footage, what you were doing there when that woman was killed, and most importantly why I didn’t learn about this from you?”

“Chief, I…” Her mind went blank. … Angela stood and paced the office. “Chief, I screwed up. I didn’t compromise the case. What I did there …” her voice faltered. She knew what happened to her very well could relate to the investigation. “…had nothing to do with the case.”

“Everyone in that hotel has to be questioned, checked, and double-checked. Angela, I don’t want to pry, but we need to interview the guy you were with.”

Angela’s stomach tightened. She felt as if she would throw up.

“He’s not a suspect,” she said, voice little more than a whisper.

“Everyone is.”

“He was with me when the call came, you don’t need to talk with him.”

“Coroner puts the time of death between ten that morning and noon. The call came in at twelve-eighteen; the first officers were on the scene at twelve twenty-four. I know you were here until eleven forty-five. That leaves a couple of hours where your…friend…is unaccounted for.”

I was with a killer.

The thought rammed through Angela so hard she almost gasped. She felt dizzy.

“Angela?”

She shook her head.

“Detective, that’s not a request. I am ordering you to divulge his identity.”

“I…don’t know.”

Angela bowed her head, gaze on the floor. The room was beginning to spin, and Angela thought for a moment that was appropriate, given that her life was about to spin out of control.

“Detective, I don’t really want to get into any details here, nothing more than the case requires. And I’ll keep as much out of the public arena as possible, but you have to explain what’s going on. You didn’t know the guy?”

She closed her eyes, leaned back until her head rested on the wall behind the chair. “She opened her eyes, stared directly at the chief. “I met him online.”

“I need to know who this guy is.”

“I don’t know.”

“Describe him for me. We’ll use that to find him.”

Angela leaned over, propped her elbows on her thighs and buried her face in her hands. “I don’t know what he looks like.”

She heard a heavy sigh.

“Chief, I…we…I had an itch to experiment…I was blindfolded the whole time.”

“Jesus Christ,” the chief said, his voice cracking as he did. “Next thing you’re going to tell me is he had you trussed up like a damn turkey.”

Angela looked up from her hands.

“God damn,” the chief whispered….

The Road That Leads To Home by Jaimie Hope

Meet Sara Rhea!
What is your full name? Do you have a nickname?

Sara Rhea

What do you consider your hair color? Eye color?

I have dark brown eyes and hair.

How would you describe your own facial features?

Overall, I’d have to say I’m fairly average. I often think I blend into the woodwork at the inn. However, my eyes are my favorite facial feature. They are very expressive and I often think I missed my calling when I went to college for advertising over pursuing my dream of a career in the theater.

Do you have a secret?

Doesn’t everyone? Keep reading the series and you may find out what it is.

What makes you laugh out loud?

My father is usually the only one who can make me laugh out loud. He’s a pretty big guy, and I know my boyfriends used to be scared of him in high school. Thinking back on that now makes me laugh out loud because my father is a great big teddy bear. He loves to make people smile.

James gives Sara a rose...
Have you ever been in love? Had a broken heart?

James is the love of my life. Losing him has been devastating, and yet I still don’t believe our journey together is complete.

What is your biggest fear? Who have you told this to? Who would you never tell this to? Why?

I faced my biggest fear when I lost James. My new biggest fear is I won’t be able go on without him. I haven’t told that to anyone, but I definitely wouldn’t want Becca to know about it. My big sister and I have gotten closer since I came back home, but I still don’t trust her not to use my fears against me in an argument, and we still do argue with the best of em.

Look at your feet. Describe what you see there. Does you wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Are your socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or are you wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by you grandmother?

My feet are currently wrapped up in my blanket. I am wearing the green and white wool slipper socks James used to say reminded him of Strawberry Shortcake.

What is in your refrigerator right now? On your bedroom floor? On you nightstand? In your garbage can?

Right now, in the refrigerator is the roast that is marinating for tomorrow night’s dinner. My garbage can is empty. On my bedroom floor is the clothes I just changed out of, and on my nightstand is a silver framed picture of James and my clock radio.

You're doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for you to throw out? What is difficult for you to part with? Why?

The easiest thing for me to part with is my old sneakers. They have holes in the bottom of their soles. The hardest thing for me to part with is the panda bear in the back of my closet because James gave it to me.

Sara feels...
What is one strong memory that has stuck with you from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

That’s a tough one because I have a lot of great childhood memories. The one that sticks out in my mind the most right now is my first day of high school. I met James that day. Somehow, I just knew he was going to be someone very special in my life. Turns out I was right.

It’s Saturday at noon. What are you doing? Give details. If you're eating breakfast, what exactly are you eating? If you're stretching out in your backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel do you lie on?

Saturday afternoons are spent working at the inn. At noon, I would be helping get lunch served to the guests.

You’re getting ready for a night out. Where are you going? What are you wearing? Who are you going out with?

I don’t get out much anymore, but when I did, my favorite spot was the coffee shop. James and I could spend hours there just talking. There’s nothing like spending a Saturday night drinking coffee and sharing a laugh with someone special. The best part? I could have the time in my life wearing an old pair of jeans and a sweater.

Synopsis
Sara always knew she was different from other girls, but she never knew how much. She'd been having dreams all her life. It didn’t bother her when they played out in reality the next day. After all, that happens to everyone sometimes, didn't it? When the phone rings one morning with devastating news she knew was coming she could no longer ignore her gift. She also couldn't help wondering if she could have changed the fate of those she loved if only she would have spoken up sooner.

“Why are you fighting this?" James groaned. "I know what you said, but I don't buy that. I've seen the future, and it's me. You know we belong together. Nothing else matters."

Review
When I opened this book I was looking for a description of Sara. Little did I know that the book would take hold and I wouldn't be able to put it down till I finished it. This book touched my heart in ways I could not begin to describe here without breaking down. There were times where I laughed out loud and other times where I had to wait to continue reading because my eyes were blurred with tears. I never expected the ending to be what it was, and wish it was not as it is now. I don't know what or if the author has plans to write a second book after this one but I would hope that she will. To end a book on such a heart felt moment and not know what will come next... I would encourage the author to continue this story. I would also recommend this short story to others.

Book Description:
Somedays Jena Crowe just can’t get a break. Work at the diner never ends, her two boys are bundles of energy, and she’s pretty sure her oldest is about to shift into something furry or feathery. Added to that, changes seem to be coming to the tiny town of Cambio Springs, big changes that not everyone in the isolated town of shapeshifters is thrilled about.

Caleb Gilbert was looking for change, and the quiet desert town seemed just the ticket for a more peaceful life. He never counted on violence finding him, nor could he have predicted just how crazy his new life would become.

When murder rocks their small community, Caleb and Jena will have to work together. And when the new Chief of Police isn’t put off by any of her usual defenses, Jena may be faced with the most frightening change of all: lowering the defenses around her carefully guarded heart.

Shifting Dreams is the first novel in Cambio Springs, the new paranormal romance series from Elizabeth Hunter, author of the best-selling Elemental Mysteries.

Excerpt

Caleb tensed as he heard the low growl.

Not just one lion, but two. Two big, snarling beasts who were holding the boys hostage in the Cliff House. And keeping Caleb from getting to them. He tried not to panic. How was he going to get to the boys? Throw rocks? The cat on the rocks kept snarling at Low while the other began to move toward Caleb. He glanced around. His gun was back in the truck. Why hadn’t he brought it? He cursed his carelessness.

“Low,” he called. “Try to stay calm. I’m coming over there.”

“Go away!” Low shouted at the lion. “I don’t know who you are, just leave us alone!” He jabbed at it again.

“Lo-ow…” Aaron sobbed behind his brother.

“Boys!” Caleb yelled. “Stay calm.” Who the hell were these lions? He wanted to strangle them with his bare hands.

“Caleb, get them away!” Aaron cried harder.

He started toward the one on the ground, holding his hands up. He could see a ragged ear twitch as he walked closer, but the creature didn’t attack. Neither did the one on the rocks. It snarled, causing Caleb’s gut to clench in fear, but it didn’t pounce when it easily could have. The animal watched him, crouching down and keeping his eyes on Caleb while it’s brother snarled at the boys in the Cliff House.

“Who are you, you bastard?” he muttered. “What do you want?”

“Caleb!” Aaron screamed.

“Shoot them!” Low yelled.

The one near the boys whipped its head around and curled its lips at Caleb just as he heard Cathy running through the brush. He heard the distinctive sound of a pump action shotgun a second before Cathy yelled, “Get away from my boys!”

Excerpt:

I ate my sandwich in peace, with only the birds for company. Here’s the thing about feelings: I felt like I was ok out here, I felt like no one would catch me. Somehow my feelings betrayed me, I looked up and out of the corner of my eye I saw blonde dreadlocks moving through the bleachers. She was far enough away still that I could have gotten up and left. I was just about to when she called my name.

“Blaine,” she waved. When I looked at her I was stuck. My body froze, I was immobile. And then I did something I could have sworn was someone else. I waved at her, when she saw I was finally responding to her like a normal human, she gave me a mischievously sexy grin. My heart stopped, could she be getting prettier? Was that even possible? It was; the proof was walking toward me right now. She had her dreads tied back, but some had escaped and were floating through the air as she quickened her pace. Her shirt was red with the words Rasta written on it and Bob Marley’s face within the lettering.

“I have been looking for you all day,” she explained as she closed in. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of vulnerability as she stood in front of me.

“Why?” I questioned.

“I don’t know really, I thought maybe—we could talk more,” she shrugged. When she did a stray lock fluttered in front of her face, making the sun reflect off of the golden highlights.

“Why would you want to talk to me? It’s not like I give off the friendliest appearance,” I started gathering my things. I was going to leave like I had with all the other people who had tried to talk to me. If anything I needed to leave, she was causing me to question my sanity.

“That’s the thing, I don’t think you’re as mean as everyone thinks you are. There is no way someone who looks like you could be that big of an asshole. You have pissed off a lot of people today; it was funny hearing all the girls complain, saying you wouldn’t give them the time of day. There was rumors spreading, everyone thinks you’re gay,” she stated seriously.

I laughed; I laughed so hard it rattled my chest. “Gay? What would give them that impression? I swear this is the exact reason I tried not talking to anyone. Drama, it seems like they can’t live without it.”

“Sounds a lot like high school; Oh—wait we are in high school. You just seem to have missed the memo,” she teased.

“No, I didn’t miss anything. I just don’t want to act like a child. Why do you need drama? It’s pointless, we are in school to learn and get ready for the real world.” It was getting exhausting telling this to kids my age. It was good advice, but instead of taking it they called me names.

“This is how you prepare for your life after high school. If you think the real world doesn’t have drama, then you are sadly mistaken my friend. If anything the ‘real world’ as you like to call it, is worse than high school,” she stated .She was getting more and more attractive as the time passed. My breathing started to hitch, I needed to get away from her.

“Well—this,” I moved my eyes to her and then to the ground. “Was nice, but I have to go. I like to get to my classes on time,” I waved awkwardly to her and set off.

“You can run Blaine but you can’t hide. I usually get what I want.” I didn’t know what she was talking about. All I knew was I had to get away, and as far as I could.

I laughed to myself. She was so amazing, and she was right, she got what she wanted, me. She never gave up, she was relentless. No matter if I hid in the library or bleachers, she even found me in the bathroom a couple times. Every time she would find me she would tell me I needed to be more creative with my hiding spots. Kaya was mine now, and I was glad she didn’t give up on me.

“You ready Blaine?” asked Mr. Juno the principle.

“I was born ready,” I shook his rough plump hand and walked onto the stage. Kaya was sitting in the crowd with all the other kids in our graduating class, it was a sea of white hats. Standing out with her blonde dreads piled on top of her head. I smiled at her beautiful face when I spotted her. I looked to the front and there my mother and father were sitting. My mother had a sour look on her face as my father checked his watch repeatedly. My smile faltered, and as it did Kaya caught on to my worried look. She waved both her hands in the air to get my attention, and when I looked at her she flashed me. My mouth fell open, but I was only in shock for a minute. I shook my head and walked up to the podium.

Time to give the best damn speech anyone has ever heard, “Fellow students, teachers, and family. We are here today to celebrate the ending of a chapter, and the beginning of another. My name is Blaine Macalister if you didn’t know, and I have been honored with the title of valedictorian. The last four years I have been here at Angelo Rodriguez High have been the best years of my life. I have found myself, as I am positive most the student body has. I have met some of the finest people in my life,” I looked at Kaya then at my best friend Gabriel. He was the guy who talked to me at orientation, telling me Kaya wouldn’t want anything to do with me, boy was he wrong. And that’s the reason we became friends, he was in awe at how I had her chasing me all over campus. “I am honored to call this school ‘my school’. I’m supposed to be up here telling you what we are going to have to look forward to in life. And I will, life is going to be kick ass after school,” everyone in the crowd gasped. They weren’t used to me cussing; I was after all--the chosen one. “I wanted to give you something you all would remember, something that would leave an impression on your minds for the rest of your lives. Just remember one thing, and everything else in life will be easy, it will be beautiful if you choose it to be. Love—love is what I want you all to keep in your hearts. It’s the only thing in life worth fighting for, without it we are just hollow, soulless vessels. So, if you do anything in life, something you know will be worth fighting for, love. Love your family, love your friends, and find that someone who makes you want to be a better person. Love is the reason I treasure this school the most, I have met my soul mate walking the halls of this school, or more accurately, hiding from the halls in this school,” I chuckled. “So I thank you all, and I thank the universe, as weird as it may seem. My life began at this school, and it taught me everything my mother had always been trying to tell me, love is what is important. I love you mom, and Kaya,” I found her in the crowd. “I love you with my heart and soul Goldie Locks,” I blow her a kiss, and then ripped open my shirt, where my chest was covered in words. It said, “Without your love I would have been a soulless vessel.” My mother was crying, and my father was looking at me like I had lost my mind, and maybe I had. He hadn’t raised me to act like a crazed love sick pup. I was raised to be reserved and strong. It seems like my mother won, she has always wanted me to open up more, and I knew by looking at her now that she was the most proud she has ever been.
