The seedier side of New Orleans is the background to this dark romance. Lara is barely surviving working at a "burlesque" show. Added to her troubles is the fact she is protecting a thirteen-year-old orphan named Molly. Men surrounding them in that business leer at them both, while Lara is trying her best to protect Molly from the pedophiles.
Mark accepts a job at the theatre because he has no other option. No money, no family... he needs to eat and have a roof over his head. Once he meets Lara, he falls hard for her. She is an innocent caught in this web of malice that is the undercurrent at this theatre. Her dreams to become a singer since it is the only thing she knows to do to earn a living, drive her and scare her at the same time. This appeals to Mark's instinctual need to protect. He swears to be there for her.
The forces of evil at this theatre all sum up to one scumbag~ Guy! This is a man from which all humans should run and hide. His depravity was more than I could stand.
This is a strong, dark, and emotional series. Not for the faint of heart. Our author is very classy in how she depicts the horrors of the secrets kept at this theatre. It is the subject matter that you must be cautioned about.
There is a sequel coming out on January 22nd. I hope this story will give us the twist we need to reach a somewhat happy ending for these innocents caught in this web of evil.
