BLURB
An otherworldly, evil and dangerous force infests America’s oldest and most haunted city, St. Augustine, Florida. Everyone living there, or visiting, is at risk in ways too horrible to imagine.
Standing between this invader and the people of St. Augustine are teenagers Jeff and Carla, the mysterious Native American shaman, Lobo, and Lyle, the homeless guy.
In their quest to save themselves and all the inhabitants of this ancient Florida city, Jeff and Carla uncover lost parts of St. Augustine history, push past the limits of space and time, and come face-to-face with what they come to realize are the true walking dead.
EXCERPT
“First of all, never let your thoughts and emotions dazzle you like they did as you watched that wild parade go by. If you do, you’ll never be able to use Frozen Time effectively.
“Remember to start by focusing on your breathing and of course, don’t fight the problem. Then do just as you did today, concentrate intently on making everything stop.
“This does get easier every time you do it. Keep in mind though that Frozen Time only lasts for short periods—shorter when you’re new at it. Now, to undo what you have created here, you just concentrate on the reverse and think about everything moving again. Very simple, really.”
As Lobo spoke, I bent over and stared at two people in a grey and black Mini Cooper about ten feet behind me—a man and a woman, probably in their thirties.
“OK, I understand, but what if we touched any of these people?” I asked, fascinated by the possibilities of what I was seeing. “Would they feel it?”
“No. During periods of Frozen Time, all living things around you become solidified in a manner that makes it impossible for them to be impacted in any way. You could take a hammer to a leaf from any of the trees around here, for example, and do no damage.
“But if you wanted to speak with those two people in the car and you concentrated hard enough, they would awaken.
“That, however, is something you don’t want to do just now. They’re not prepared in any way to deal with what we’re experiencing. You might give them heart attacks or mental breakdowns.”
“Oh,” I replied, becoming increasingly aware of the incredible responsibility I now possessed in addition to having such a powerful ability. The more I thought about it, the more I wondered if I would know how to use it properly. Reading my thoughts, Lobo said, “You wouldn’t have gotten this far if you didn’t possess that capacity. It’s sort like a built-in fail-safe mechanism. It comes with the territory.”
“Really?” I asked in wonder, especially after all the hard times Lobo had given me since I first met him. Before replying, he motioned me to follow him as he walked off the street and back to the benches.
REVIEW
Stepping Off A Cliff is Book 2 in The St. Augustine Trilogy and it is a mixture of paranormal, time travel, action and mystery all in one. It is a fascinating book with a very interesting storyline that makes you want to know what happens next. Just like Sliding Beneath the Surface, Book 1 in the Trilogy, it had my attention right from the beginning.
Jeff, Carla, Lobo and Lyle are in great danger. They are dealing with something that is very big and paranormal. It is something that Jeff and Carla haven’t dealt with before but Lobo and Lyle have, a long time ago in their past. Lobo warns them about the danger that they are in and he gets them prepared for what they need to do. Will Jeff and Carla be ready for what is to come?
Their adventure together has begun. They will risk their lives to save themselves, the people and the city of St. Augustine. Will they be able to save everyone and the city before it is too late?
As I was reading, I could feel the rollercoaster emotions that they were feeling during their dangerous adventure. I felt like I was right there with them.
Doug Dillon has done an amazing job again! Thank you so much for another awesome adventure in The St. Augustine Trilogy! Stepping Off A Cliff is a must read so I definitely recommend all my book friends to check it out.
I give this awesome book 5 Dandy's!!
About the Author
A former award-winning educator, Doug writes about things paranormal and historical. His interest in the paranormal comes from personal experiences as detailed in the nonfiction adult book he and wife wrote titled, AN EXPLOSION OF BEING: AN AMERICAN FAMILY'S JOURNEY INTO THE PSYCHIC. Out of those events and extensive historical research, he created SLIDING BENEATH THE SURFACE for young adults, Book I of the St. Augustine Trilogy. Doug set his trilogy in the oldest and most haunted city in the United States, St. Augustine, Florida not only for those reasons, but also because it's his favorite place to visit. Books II and III of the trilogy are on the way.
