Some secrets should never be revealed…

Brylee Branson begrudgingly made the excruciating move with her family from the warm sandy beaches of California to small town living in New Jersey. As if she wasn’t miserable enough, they’ve moved into a creepy old house that everyone in the area claims is haunted. Brylee dismisses the idea of ghosts and hauntings, until she begins to see and hear things that can’t be explained…

Brylee has no choice but to seek the help of new friends to unlock the secrets of this place she now calls home. But some secrets should never be revealed. Can the teens find a way to release the spirits imprisoned within the walls? Or will the curse claim them, too?

Excerpt

Hearing the hinges squeak, I realized my door was opening. I shoved my face into my pillow, unable to speak to my mom about anything right now. I didn’t know how long I had slept and I didn’t care. I wanted only to be left alone for a little while. Cold air entered the room and I pulled the covers over my head. "I don’t want to talk," I mumbled. There was no response, so I lifted my head, checking to see if the coast was clear. My face was met with another and it wasn’t my mom. She stared into my eyes, the fair-haired woman that I had seen last week. I gasped as she pulled out her comb and started to brush my hair. I felt sick and scared. What the hell was she doing?

"So beautiful. So perfect," she whispered. "I would kill for hair like yours. I would kill to be you."

"Who. Are. You?" I managed to say. She smiled a wicked smile that showed rotten teeth behind her beautiful lips. I cringed, pulling away from her, and she dropped the brush on the floor.

"Look what you made me do!" she yelled. I pulled my covers over my head, willing her to go away.

"Go away, go away, go away!" I yelled back. The covers left my hands as she ripped them off of me. She moved her face close to mine, her rancid breath stinging my nose. "I can’t leave."

The truth can be deadly.

Brylee Branson’s best friend and boyfriend have fallen victim to a horrible curse that haunts her home. With the witches who cast it dead she has no choice but to rely on the ghosts inside the Brown house to help her find a cure. But time is not on her side, because Lynley's illness is spreading rapidly.

Confused and scared, seventeen-year-old Brylee must confront a new ghost in the house she has never spoken to before. This spirit is not a Brown relative and makes no promises to help them … unless she can re-unite her with a loved one.

The fate of those she loves now rests on her. Can Brylee put the pieces of this puzzle together in time to save them? Or will the Brown house claim another victim?

The Visitor’s Series continues to scare and entice its readers with this gripping second book.

Excerpt

After we ate, my mom made us do dishes like usual. Ephraim rinsed as I washed; it was our routine. We had it down pat.

"So not happy about your trip, huh?" he asked as he flung bubbles at me.

"No, can you tell? I just don’t want to be away from you," I admitted.

"Brylee, you can’t worry about that. Go home and visit with your family. It’s been a long time since you have seen them, right?"

"Yeah, it has." I hated it when he was right. "I won’t have any fun without you."

He rolled his eyes. "Yeah right and I will be having the time of my life here working all summer."

He would be working this summer and I would be alone anyway. Maybe this trip wouldn’t be so bad after all. I just wish it wasn’t two whole weeks. I thought maybe that I would try to talk my parents into shortening the trip. I looked around at our kitchen and the work my mom put into it. I wouldn’t miss the house and its inhabitants, that was for sure.

"Just don’t go meeting some hot guy and leave me for him, okay?" he teased.

"Ephraim, there is no one else in this whole world I want to be with more than you." He grabbed me and I almost dropped the dish. He placed me up on the counter and I wrapped my legs around him. My soapy hands ran through his chestnut brown hair. Leaning his head back, he closed his eyes. He liked it when I did that."You’re making me want to carry you upstairs and do bad things," he joked. Luckily, my parents were outside drinking their after dinner coffee. "Why don’t you then?"

Review

Have you ever picked up a book just because the cover intrigued you?  Have you ever went ahead and purchased the book once you read the back/blurb and thought this is something I just might be interested in?  This turned out to be the case with me and The Brown House, the cover had me curious as did the title of the book.  And sure enough I just love a good mystery/ghost story...
The Brown House is simply that, a brown house, Brylee and her family move into so that her father may start working again after being laid off for a year.  There are no such things as ghosts or Brylee tells herself when unexplained things start to happen.  She didn't make contact with the door handle and yet it still opens on it's own.  Who is that girl with the purple hair?  Or is she a figment of Brylee's imagination?  She was there and then she's not...

This book had me turning the pages faster than I could even begin to describe, I couldn't help but move on to The Crimson Key just as I finished the last page of The Brown House.  And I did just that....

After reading The Brown House I just had to know what Chrisy Sloat had written in her next book, The Crimson Key.  There was no turning back for me as fast as I devoured book one.  I just could not shake the feeling that someone or something was watching me as I kept turning the pages in my own home. ::creepy::

The Crimson Key is simply, a key to open and unlock the curse of The Brown House so that Brylee can save her friends.  No one knows what is to happen, or what could happen if the curse wins and Brylee fails.  She must seek spirits of the house, known and unknown to her in order to find the key to unlock the curse before her friends become victims.  While Lynley's illness rapidly spreads, will Brylee make it in time to save her friends?
