Synopsis
Eris Payton believes she's going insane when she meets Nelson -- a lucent -- a being that has always been invisible and silent to humans -- until Eris. When his brother falls ill, Nelson brings Eris news of her estranged dad, the acclaimed geneticist Dr. Payton. Nelson not only introduces Eris to a world she didn’t know existed by taking her to Downside, but to people who accept her for who she is. It isn't as easy as that though.
Lucents have innate abilities to manipulate living energy. Another ability, although difficult, dangerous, and rarely preformed, is to merge their DNA with a human to save that person's life. The two literally become one, known as a hybrid. Nelson became a hybrid only a few months ago and still has his own demons to fight. Dr. Payton also became a hybrid -- years ago when he mysteriously disappeared -- and has disappeared again after he established a quarantine. But what does this have to do with Eris?
The lucents' unique DNA leaves them vulnerable to viruses that humans don't even know about, and it is one such virus that has spread through the lucent communities. However, according to detailed notes left behind by Dr. Payton, the specially engineered DNA that makes Eris able to see and hear the lucents while remaining human also holds the key to curing the epidemic that has devastated the lucent population. Will she be able to cope with the largest upheaval her life has ever seen?
Clip From To Eris - Human
Ashley's eyes widened and her voice trembled. "There was no one around taller than Steve. You couldn't possibly know that shirt. He's been gone for… You only moved in two weeks ago. You couldn't have seen it." Her hands began to shake and she glanced around nervously.
"Sure I did," I said. "I've seen him several times before, and he walked right by you most of the way back here," I couldn't understand why Ashley had such a reaction to my question, or description.
She shook her head fiercely in refusal and backed away from me. I noticed the look of fear, pain, and guilt collect on her face before she turned and ran across the lot to her apartment.
"Good going Eris," the other girl said in a hushed, but obviously debasing voice. "Matt disappeared a month before you moved here. No one has seen him, or heard from him since,"
"Who's Matt?" I asked.
"Ashley's older brother," she said. "He got into a fight with their parents and took off one night. I don’t know how you found out about his shirt, but that was pretty cruel of you to do that to Ashley. Especially after all she's done for you. She's the one that wanted to include you in our group. I gotta go." She took off before I could say anything else. The sting in this girl's voice and the look on Ashley's face stunned me into silent immobility.
Excerpt
"I hurt someone,"
he finally said....
"Is that why you didn't want to go to the party?"
I asked.
He hesitated again before finally saying, "Yes."
"How much damage did I cause?" I asked,
worried that someone would get hurt from me too.
"Lakeside Cavern and half of Intermindum Cavern are
out," he said quietly. "The clinic is fine, and Quinn was
resting well when I left."
"So, how did you know what happened?" I asked.
"The lights flickered that far, but stayed on,"
he said quickly. "You're the only other person here strong
enough to cause a blackout."
I tried to shift to a more comfortable position and stop
shivering. Fresh pain shot through my leg again and I cried out.
"Eris!" Nelson said anxiously.
"I just tried to move," I said. My voice
betrayed the shaking that my body was doing.
"What's the matter?" he asked concern dripping
from his words.
"Just my leg," I said, confused.
"No, you sound different," he said.
"I can't stop shivering," I said. "It's
not bad, just annoying."
"Are you cold?" he asked.
"Yeah, why?" I asked.
He paused again and I started to worry more. "Nothing,"
he said. "Keep your energy steady. I'm almost there."
He talked to me about sitting out and watching the stars
again, how they seemed to go on forever and he could get lost
counting them. After another minute or two of talking, the phone got
muffled again.
"Eris," Nelson yelled without the phone.
"I'm over here," I yelled back.
"I'll be right there," he yelled back to me.
"Go ahead and hang up the phone now."
Shortly after that, I saw two glowing eyes in the same
direction I'd seen the glow of the fireworks. I didn't scream at him
this time and he rushed to my side, examining my leg.
"I'm going to pick you up," he said. "It'll
hurt, but I have to get you to the clinic."
I nodded. I couldn't see more than his eyes, but I knew
he could see me. I tried to contain the scream as he moved me and
only marginally succeeded. He carefully carried me in the darkness.
Shortly later, lights started to come on. It started with some
orange lights that reminded me of fog lights. Not all of them worked
and I remembered hearing glass shattering.
My mind started to float around from one thing to
another, like I had the time the dentist gassed me when I was a
little kid. Maybe the lights were for me. Nelson's chest and arms
felt warm, and I lay my head against him.
"Tell me about the party," Nelson said. "What
music did they play?"
I tried to think about the songs, but I couldn't recall
many of them. Odd shapes passed us in the gloom. Some carried
cases, others handled strange devises. Nelson moved quickly as a
large object moved past us. I couldn't focus my eyes enough to
register what I saw. The breeze created by the movement felt cold to
me. I wished I could stop shivering.
"Stay with me, Eris," Nelson said. The
urgency in his voice startled me.
"Where else would I go? I don't have anyone else,"
I said, and everything started to fade into blackness again -- a
different darkness than the blackout I'd caused.
"No you don't," he said. "Wake up."

I grew up in Vermont mostly and now live in Virginia with my family (those still at home). My husband and I have a blended family of seven kids. My childhood was spent moving around a lot. (non-military) About five years ago, we started home-schooling our youngest children. Now there are only two remaining in home-school. I have tried to nurture the love of books in our children and now our grandchildren -- always nurturing their imaginations. Recently, I have become active in our community with literacy, starting a local (and online) creative writing club and volunteer tutoring at the Adult Learning Center.
I struggle with disabilities. So, have to be careful not to overdo things... I don't always listen to my own advice. I have a dry, sarcastic and corny sense of humor and always try to look at things optimistically. (again not always successful) However, I feel that if I don't give up -- for long -- then things will work out for the best eventually.
