Quotes from Breathless:
“Just for the sake of this class, let’s assume vampires really do exist.” The professor winked at them. “It will make things so much more fun, don’t you think?”
Stefan retracted his fangs. “It seems this is your lucky day, volkaane—you’ll not die tonight.”
Rave extinguished the magical blue fire that flickered from his fingertips. “I could say the same to you, vampire, were you not already mostly dead.”
“Why do you care about fitting in?” Stefan asked Leesa. “Fitting in is overrated, if you ask me.”
“And he hasn’t tried to, you know, bite your neck or anything?” Cali asked.
“Ha! No, he’s always been nice." Leesa unconsciously rubbed her neck. “A bit strange, for sure, but nice.”
Cali grinned. “Of course he’s a bit strange—he’s a freaking vampire!”
“Oh my god,” Judy said, feeling the small puncture wound on her throat. “I think I was bitten by a vampire. A one-fanged vampire.”
“I was drawn to you the first time I saw you.” Rave flashed his lopsided grin. “Maybe it’s the vampire blood in you. That always gets my attention.”
Damn his inner fire—what was she supposed to do, kiss him through an oven mitt?
The feeling of warmth that exploded into her as their tongues connected was beyond imagining. She felt like she was flying, like a thousand tiny mouths were kissing every inch of her body, like her skin was wrapped in the most delicious chocolate and every pore could taste it.
Cali smiled. “Rule seventeen: always make friends with a really cute girl. There's bound to be more guys around than she can handle, so maybe I can scoop up some leftovers.”
“Sexy works for me,” Cali said, grinning. “I’m always happy to keep an eye out for sexy.”
Excerpt
Rave took Leesa’s hand. “So, what’s on your mind?”
Leesa hesitated. Now that she had made a big deal about her dream, she felt a little foolish talking about it. Still, she needed to learn whatever she could, and her vampire hunter boyfriend was definitely her best link to the supernatural world.
“It’s about a dream I had the other night. I dreamed some bodies dug themselves up out of the ground and walked around an old cemetery like a bunch of zombies or something.”
“So what? You were probably just remembering part of some movie or TV show you saw. I hear zombies are all the rage right now.”
“That’s what I thought at first, even though the dream seemed so real. It’s what happened the next day that has me kind of freaked out.”
Rave’s face grew serious. “What happened?”
“There was a story on the news about someone digging up bodies in a graveyard over in Haddam. Cali found a video of the place on YouTube. The bodies on the ground looked a lot like the ones from my dream.” She pointed to the statue of a Revolutionary War soldier in front of them. “One of the corpses was wearing a hat just like that one. So was one of the bodies in my dream. That can’t just be coincidence.”
Rave hesitated, unsure what to say. Leesa was having a tough time dealing with the existence of vampires. Was he going to have to tell her about the undead now, too?
