Teaser | Allusive Aftershock by Susan Griscom #AllusiveAftershock

Teaser

His dog Shiloh, on the other hand, a black mixed lab, took a step forward, wanting my attention. My heart melted as she wagged her tail fast enough to knock a small child across the porch and nuzzled the palm of my hand, her wet cold nose sliming my fingers. I smiled at the feeling and looked up into Courtland’s eyes that lingered on me for a few seconds before he averted them back to the ground once again.

“Ah, is your dad home?”

I nodded, unable to find my voice. Why was it again Max hated Courtland?

“He called me to come over to check on the horses,” Courtland said, his eyes squinting from the sun, making him frown a bit, adding to that dangerous look he sometimes had going.

Now I was the one studying the cracks in the old red-painted concrete porch my dad had been threatening to remodel with wood decking since we’d moved there eight years ago. Why anyone would paint concrete is beyond me. What’s wrong with plain gray? I mean, everybody knows it’s concrete.

“He’s over at the stable,” I said, managing to locate my voice somewhere down past my esophagus, the statement so curt, I even surprised myself.

“Thanks.” He turned and headed down the pathway.

“Wait,” I shouted, not sure what I wanted to say. I wasn’t about to apologize for my rudeness, that’s for sure, but I didn’t want him to mess with Big Blue. I wanted to be the one to calm him and talk to him. Big Blue was my horse and I didn’t see the need to have a stranger whisper in my horse’s ear. If anybody was going to do any whispering to Big Blue, it was going to be me, no matter what my dad said.

He turned and stared at me; the cool morning breeze blew his thick dark hair into his eyes. He brushed the strands away with long slender fingers and for the first time, I noticed that his eyes were not only green but also the deepest shade of emerald I’d ever seen.

“Yeah?” he said coolly.

“Um …what exactly are you going to do?”

His lip curved up on one side. “Well, I don’t know yet. I’ll have to ask the horses what they want.”

I blinked. “Oh,” was all I could think of to say to such an odd statement and he turned and walked away. Shiloh pushed her nose against my hand one more time before turning to follow Court. What did he mean, “ask the horses?”

BLURB

Seventeen-year-old Mackenzie Smith is sent away to spend a boring summer at her grandma's. But then she meets Wesley. He tells her exactly what she wants to hear and has information about her past that no one else knows. It's almost like he can read her mind.

Only Wesley isn't who he seems.

By the time Mackenzie discovers his true identity it may be too late. She's in too deep and he won't let her go. Now Mackenzie must call on the strongest power of all in order to save her life.

EXCERPT

“Hello Kenzie.”

He turned toward me. I gasped in horror. He was faceless. His face was a black hole with no eyes, nose or mouth, like a shadow. Was this what ghosts looked like? I thought for sure they’d be white like in the movies. “Oh, I’m sorry,” he said. “Is this better?”

His face transformed before my eyes. Black turned into peach colored flesh. It stretched and bent to reveal a cartilage filled nose. Two eyes popped out, and ears broke through the side of his head. Lips, hair, a body, and clothes appeared. My mouth dropped open, and hung loosely as if it had come unhinged. I slapped my hand over it to keep from screaming.

“You don’t need to scared,” he said.

“How did you do that?”

“You think that’s amazing? I can do much more than that.”

I nodded, taking a deep breath. “I think that’s enough for me right now.” He moved toward me, crawling stealthily on the bed like a cat. I moved away from him until I was pinned against the wall. He smiled, revealing blood red gums and a perfect row of white teeth. His pupils were black, and the whites were filled with spidery red and purple veins. My body shook.

“Why are you scared, Kenzie? Don’t you recognize me?”

BLURB

Mackenzie returns home from the summer with her grandma, certain that Wesley is out of her life for good. Until the nightmares resurface, and strange things start to happen. Is Wesley back? When the danger escalates and threatens those closest to her, Mackenzie must fight to save them. Only this time the evil is more powerful, and Mackenzie is faced with an impossible decision.

EXCERPT

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” I asked Tanner as I stared down at the foamy rush of water.

“Breathtaking.”

I glanced up at Tanner who was staring right at me with a look so intense it caused heat to rise up my neck and spill across my cheeks. Taking a deep breath, I averted my gaze. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone with the intention of taking a couple photos.

“So, you’re calling him, huh?” I tried to ignore the jealousy in Tanner’s voice; tried to tell myself it was just a figment of my imagination. I wanted to believe that Tanner only thought of me as a friend, and that he supported my relationship with Isaac. But deep down I knew that wasn’t true.

I shook my head. “No, I was just going to take some pictures.”

Relief swept over his features. He beamed at me. “Here, let me.” He grabbed the phone from my hand. Holding it out in front of us, he pressed his cheek to mine and snapped a shot. He was so close I could smell his aftershave lotion, and the sweat on his skin. My pulse quickened. My heart pounded in my chest. He turned to me, his face inches from mine.

I froze, unable to move or even breathe. His face came closer and somewhere in the back of my mind, alarm bells went off. I knew I should step back, or push him away. But my feet stayed rooted to the ground, like I was a tree on the mountain, a permanent fixture. I could hear the blood rushing through my ears, feel the beating of my heart. The world around us stopped. It was as if we were the only people up here. Tanner’s eyes stared into mine. I swallowed hard, and kept my gaze even.

BLURB

Mackenzie is looking forward to her eighteenth birthday and upcoming high school graduation. Until an unwelcome visitor from her past appears, threatening her future plans. Will she ever be free? Armed with a new weapon and the boy she loves by her side, Mackenzie prepares to fight. She doesn't realize that she is about to step into the ultimate battle between good and evil, where the stakes are higher than ever before.

EXCERPT

“What was that about?” Isaac asked when we got inside the house.

“What?”

“The way you said hi to your neighbor and then started looking in another direction and said hi again in a weird voice.”

“Oh.” I smiled.

“That’s just how I talk to kids.”

“Why did you do it right now though?” His brows furrowed in a look of utter confusion.

I was starting to get annoyed with this line of questioning. Can’t I say hi to a neighbor boy without getting the third degree? So what if I use an odd voice when talking to kids. Lots of people do. “Cause I was saying hi to the little boy.”

“What little boy?”

Cold slithered up my spine at Isaac’s tone. “The boy sitting next to Mrs. Kelley in the front yard.”

“There was no boy with her.”

I flung open the front door and raced outside, my heart thumping in my chest. Was I going crazy? I was sure I saw a little boy.

Relief flooded me at the sight of the child still sitting in the grass. I gave Isaac a triumphant look. “See. Right there.”

Isaac narrowed his eyes, staring in the direction I pointed. I expected an apology. Instead, he said, “Are you okay?”

“Fine. Why are you acting so weird?”

“Because there is no little boy there.” A chill brushed over my body, causing goose bumps to rise on my flesh. I glanced back at Mrs. Kelley who kept weeding, oblivious to our conversation. She also seemed not to notice the child, even though he practically sat on her legs. The boy’s neck craned to look at me, but he still didn’t smile.

Fearful, I raced back in my house. Why did I see him if no one else did? Who was he? And what was he doing next door?

Review:

Vampire World by Rich Douglas is awesome and very different from any of the Vampire books I have read. The story is very interesting and had my attention right from the start.

What would you do if all of a sudden you woke up in a strange place, no idea of what had happened and who you are? I know if it happened to me I would definitely freak out!

This is the story of Marissa. She was out with her boyfriend one evening when something really awful had happened to her. She was attacked by someone or something. She wakes up all of a sudden and finds herself in a cruel orphanage in Vampire World with no memory of her past, and has a strange craving for blood. She realizes later on that she was bit and that she is now a Vampire. The mean owner of the orphanage mentions the name Janice so that is the name that she is going by now.

Janice’s journey begins when Mr. John Freecut, an older Vampire, adopts her. She is now free of the cruel orphanage. Their relationship for each other will grow stronger as they live together. Through out the journey, Janice will learn how to adjust to her new world, she will meet new people and will also find out things about her past.

As I was reading, I felt like I was on this journey with Janice learning how to live in a Vampire World.

Rich Douglas has done an awesome job and I am looking forward to reading more of his books in the future. Vampire World is a must read so I definitely recommend my friends to check it out.

Foreign, or rather unfamiliar, would be the word I would use to describe how I felt.

Faintly, I could hear the glimmer of voices surrounding me in this dark haze, caressing my ears like skin against silk. I felt like I was in a cocoon of sorts, protectively enveloped, quietly drifting in some far-off place. I wanted to stay that way forever.

But we all know that what you want never really seems to happen in the real world.

Something’s not right in Mia’s head.

The first thing is that her name isn’t Mia. In fact, she has no clue what her name is—who she is. All that she knows is that she’s not like the ones who found her: Dante with his kind blue eyes, Amy with her child-like demeanor, James with his questioning gaze.

And Briggs.

The one she cannot decipher no matter how hard she tries.

As Mia tries to fit in with these people, a strange occurrence is amidst outside. And as she finally remembers who she is …

Well, let’s just say that things get a little more complicated.

Excerpt

I could hear the waves of the ocean crashing behind us, our feet buried in the warm sand, the grains getting between our toes. We held each other firmly, as if either one of us would instantly drop to the ground without the support of the other. His large hands gripped my waist, then loosened oh so slightly. He trailed his fingers up and down my sides, my body shivering in response. In return, I clutched the back of his neck and smiled against his skin. Showering tiny kisses along the column of his neck, I breathed in his intoxicating, familiar scent.

“You know, you’re eventually going to have to let me go,” his low voice rumbled over my head.

Character Bios

Mia

Waking up with no memory, Mia tries to find her footing in a world unfamiliar to her. She doesn’t know much about herself, actually nothing at all, except for the fact that she can’t talk. But she knows one thing: she’s not like the rest. Her hair is auburn and her eyes are a mesmerizing green.

Dante

A kind, warm-hearted guy who likes to take care of the underdogs. He lives with his sister and two friends when they stumble upon Mia in their apartment, instantly taking a liking to her. Nobody knows, but there’s something Dante’s hiding from everyone. His smile makes you want to smile in return, and his eyes are alike to an ocean.

Amy

A free-spirit, Amy is the younger sister of Dante by one year. She’s nineteen, her favorite color is pink, and she may have a slight obsession with a boy named James. She’s addicted to reality TV and loves to bake. Her favorite accessory is the black choker she can always be seen wearing.

James

The object of Amy’s affection and Dante’s buddy, he works as a chef at a restaurant nearby with Dante. He’s the quiet one in the group but has a silent inner strength which Amy finds quite addicting. He’s fluent in Japanese and one day wishes to travel the world.

Briggs

The odd man out, Briggs is part of the group but also has his own secrets. He’s distant and doesn’t trust the red-haired stranger that just happened to land in his apartment living room. His profession is unknown and he is always wearing sunglasses, as if hiding his passionate, fiery nature. Although sometimes he can’t help showing his point of view.

This is the story of their journey and of the devastating grief of the loss of her daughter, Dakota Emily Buda.

Small Teaser

Shortly after our perfectly imperfect wedding, my husband and I headed off to our honeymoon. We were thrilled. It seemed like things were finally falling into place. He had a great job and we were happy. The honeymoon was amazing. We decided to take a trip to the Pocono’s for the most amazing time at the most beautiful and entertaining resort we could find...Pocono Palace. I felt like a princess. We overly enjoyed our honeymoon. We took walks, played games in the game room, and made some memories would will last a lifetime.

Of course our honeymoon went by too quickly and after two weeks, we headed home. I was glad to though because I was missing my daughter. She’s an amazing little girl who has one heck of a sense of humor. She brightens our world. There’s not a day that goes by where she doesn’t make us laugh or make our hearts melt. Her personality is amazing and her outlook on the world is impressive.

Let me introduce to you our princess, Emma. She’s our world, our breath that we breathe, and we love her more than life itself. She’s a daddy’s girl and isn’t your typical little child. She loves to get down and dirty with her daddy when working on cars, but won’t hesitate to spend the day getting her nails painted with Mommy.

When we got back from our honeymoon, life went back to the way it was. Emma started first grade and Greg went back to work. I had a book I needed to finish writing. I tried so hard to finish this book but out of the blue, I started to get sick. My stomach would hurt and I was exhausted. Several weeks went by and I didn’t seem to be getting any better.

Then it came to me, I might be pregnant.

Review:

Saying Goodbye Without Saying Hello by Raebeth McGee-Buda is an emotional and very inspiring book. It is an amazing story that had my attention from the very beginning.

In her own words, Raebeth tells us the true story of her life before, during and after her pregnancy with her Angel baby Dakota Emily. Her words are very captivating as she tells us the emotions that she felt during and after her pregnancy.

I can’t say that I understand what Raebeth went through and how she felt after her pregnancy because I haven’t ever experienced it to know. Reading her story has made me realize and opened my eyes to understand what any woman who are expecting goes through when they lose a child after being born.

I had a rollercoaster emotion the whole time I was reading her book and had tears in my eyes.

I think Raebeth McGee-Buda is an amazing woman and an inspiration. She has gone through a lot in the past months with the loss of Dakota but she has managed to stay strong for herself and her family. For the past month or two she has been spreading the word about October being the month of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness and remembering all the angel babies and their families.

Raebeth McGee-Buda’s book Saying Goodbye Without Saying Hello is a must read. I definitely recommend her book to any of my friends who are mothers and soon to be mothers. I hope this book will inspire you as it did me.

I give this book 5 Dandy's!!
