Synopsis:
**** A PARANORMAL GOTHIC DETECTIVE TALE ****
Between these pages you will find yourself transported back in time to the high Gothic. Victorian London.
The year is 1899 and both the century and the Queen are dying.
As the London populace is gripped by a terrifying series of paranormal murders,
eighteen year old Kaspian Blackthorne finds himself on a decadent journey of self discovery.
Victorian London is a place where appearance is everything, but sometimes
appearances can be deceiving. Behind the grand houses, carriages and silks, London is a dark labyrinth of sorrow and violence.
Amongst the gambling dens, dancehalls, and brothels you'll find No 7,
known to its members as Eve's; the most exclusive club in London, infamous for its 'Palace of Beautiful Freaks'.
Each exhibit has a history, each their own unique story.

Excerpts:
EXCERPT CHAPTER ONE

Kaspian pondered his eighteen years as he walked through the evening gloom of the London streets. The rain had forced most people inside, creating the impression that the great metropolis had turned into a ghost town. Kaspian liked walking at times like this. It made him feel as if he were walking through his own silent empire.

Then he saw her.

She was standing under the streetlight, a newspaper held out in front of her as if she were reading it. Kaspian thought it obvious that she wasn’t; she was watching the church on the other side of the cobbled street. He stopped midstride and pulled himself behind a tree; spied on her as she took a pocket-watch from her pocket and flip open the lid. He thought it strange she should read it by placing flat in front of her eyes rather than looking down on it – it was as if she were taking a reading from a compass. Kaspian looked over to where she was watching. The church was empty and he couldn’t fathom what could possibly be of interest. The lights were out, the door locked, and the whole place had the impression of sleeping.

The woman was tall and slender; striking in a slightly over-powerful way. Despite wearing a full, black silk skirt, the fitted waistcoat and black necktie were more manish in dress than ladylike. Kaspian had never seen a woman like her, although he had heard of ‘her sort’ as Heartlock’s companions would say.

When he looked closer, he could see she wore a monocle in her left eye and was at least ten years younger than he’d guessed from the first impression: twenty one was the age he now settled on in his mind.

She must have sensed him looking at her because she turned towards him and, seeing him poking out from behind a tree, smiled. It was a strange reaction to the discovery that someone was spying on you. The boldness of her action unsettled Kaspian in a way he couldn’t quite understand. He bent down, pretending that he had been about to tie his shoelaces. When he was sure she had returned to her own secret observations, he scuttled past her and almost ran all the way to the safety of home.

By the time he pushed open the imposing, black front door, Kaspian carried the strangest sense that something deep within him had changed, and things would never be quite as before.

EXCERPT CHAPTER TWO

Steptree steeled himself for the gruesome sight he was sure awaited him. He let his breath go shallow; a trick he’d learnt to prevent the stench of death from making him wretch. He’d seen some awful violence in his time, but despite attending hundreds of murders in his ten year career, he’d never quite grown immunity. However, none of the sordid and violent ugliness he’d encountered up to this point could have prepared him for the sight in front of him.

He was expecting horror but he was greeted with a sight that was nothing short of beautiful.

At first, Steptree wasn’t sure it wasn’t all an elaborate trick; that he hadn’t been dragged from his warm bed for the sake of a stolen statue. Approaching closer, he realized it wasn’t a statue but the corpse of a young man, still standing. He was posed in the movement of a kiss; his eyes were closed, his hand raised as if still cupping the cheek of his lover. The boy almost sparkled, as if his skin were made of a quartz marble: It was so white as to almost be a shade of pale blue.

Steptree gasped, and tears pricked at the corner of eyes as he thought of how the boy was the same color as the moon, and just as luminescent. Never before had the sight of death moved him to a feeling of such sorrow. In front of him was poetry that went beyond words.

The boy sparkled. The faint flush of a youthful blush was still painted on his cheek. Steptree extended his fingers to explore the thin translucent crust which covered the boy – it was ice; perfect snowflakes had caught in the fibers of the young man’s velvet jacket and laced his eyelashes.

Steptree was an exceptionally logical man, but for the life of him he could not understand how on a slightly chilly October evening, a young man had spontaneously frozen to death. A creepy sensation spread over his skin and an alien sense of superstition entered his thoughts: It was as if the boy had been placed under a fairytale spell.

“Brown, how is this possible?” Steptree asked, his mind whirling.

“It isn’t, Sir! It isn’t possible.”

EXCERPT THREE

Since her first sighting of him, he had haunted her dreams. Evangeline rarely dreamt and so the experience was at one curious and unsettling. In her dreams the two of them were always dancing some kind of waltz. It made her feel as light as a feather; or a ghost. Cherry blossom fell over them like snow or maybe confetti. The dream was so vivid that she could feel his arm around her but it was the same kind of feel as porcelain so that although solid, it was also fragile and she knew that she might break him. Where their hands touched there was soft light. They danced and they danced, faster and faster until it became almost crazed and the world around them started to slide and crack.

Through those cracks, the demons swarmed.

Evangeline believed in demons because she knew that angels existed. She was also wise enough to know that sometimes the two were sometimes indistinguishable.

Review:

Beautiful Freaks is such a phenomenal book! I was pleasantly surprised how emotionally involved I became with many of the characters. Their stories and backgrounds had my heart aching, while my curiosity was peaked wanting to know how each would fit into the grand scheme.

Kaspian Blackthorne is an eighteen year old young man living in London during the year 1899. With his coming of age, he finds that he has new and strange abilities. He meets Eve, the owner of a very exclusive establishment and feels an instant attraction to her. In the private club No. 7, he witnesses the life altering display of the 'Palace of Freaks'. His life will never be the same, how can he live a mundane life knowing there is such bizarre and exotic creations in the world?

With a string of strange and disturbing murders taking place,he wonders if they are somehow related to the exhibits at the club and to the very sexy Eve. Trust is difficult to come by during these times of murder and violence. Can Kaspian trust Eve with his heart? Will Eve be at the center of these horrific murders?

Kaspian is a likable, but naive young man. I enjoyed his journey through the decadent world of excess. Eve, however was the focus of all my attention. I wanted to hate her, but I found I could feel the deep pain and anger she held beneath the surface. I wanted her to find peace and love, but felt in my heart this would never be the case with her. Some pain is cut too deeply into our souls that recovery isn't an option.

I highly recommend Beautiful Freaks. If you plan to read a few chapters at a time, you may want to wait until you can settle into a comfortable chair and have plenty of time to read. Once I started this book, I had to finish it. Katie M. John has created an extraordinary tale that will pull you in and have you begging for more.

About the Author
There hasn’t been a time in her life that Kamy hasn’t been writing, or dreaming up some magical love story in her head. As an avid reader, it wasn’t long before she realised her talent for turning a phrase, and add to that a profession of nursing, it’s only natural that her stories have a medical theme with that happily ever after ending.

Recently she’s discovered that all those years she’s been fascinated with TV shows like CSI and Bones, has just been foreplay for her dark side and she now enjoys writing suspense with a dash of medical and a dollop of romance.

Originally from South Africa, Kamy now lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her very own hero and two children who keep her busy. She has two dogs who keep her out of trouble and shelves overflowing with books that she loves reading when she isn’t chasing deadlines.

I Kissed A Dog Guest Post, Review and Giveaway

She kissed a Dog but found a Wolf.

Let's Welcome Carol Van Atta

I don’t know about you all, but I love my dog, Stryder. He’s a funny, furry, all white, American Eskimo with a tail that curls like a big cinnamon roll and ears that are always alert and eager for my next word. He gives me his undivided time and attention and will fetch for me, if I ask. He has good manners and knows exactly when to shake someone’s hand. He’s all about kisses, and joyfully provides those puppylicious pecks whenever I’m down, and he even comes to bed on command.

They say a dog is man’s best friend? I say my dog is mine!

As much as I like to be the boss, and appreciate the loyalty and love Stryder so willingly provides, if I had to compare him to a man, I’d say he was a tad too tame for my tastes. Granted, I want to hang on to some of those positive traits I mentioned above, but I prefer a man who is not afraid to snap the leash and lead. One who doesn’t lick me like a poodle, but who devours me like a wolf.

That’s the type of man/werewolf Chloe Carpenter finds in my latest book, I Kissed a Dog, book one in Werewolves of the West series.

Chloe is a bit like me. Slightly sarcastic, a bit flighty and indecisive (okay, a lot indecisive) and more than a little impulsive at times, but when the bad guys threaten her loved ones, she’s more than willing to use her supernatural powers to defeat the darkness. She has grown up with a deep aversion to the canine species as a whole, and considering one critter almost ended her short existence at fifteen, she isn’t a big fan of their playful ways. After spending months in a coma, she awakens with a whole new set of skills. The most impressive (initially) is her ability to communicate with animals, dogs included.

Zane Marshall, purebred werewolf enforcer, should-be pack Alpha, Veterinarian and Entrepreneur, enters Chloe’s world when she’s twenty-four, and working at a seaside wildlife park. Zane is exactly the spark she needs to light up her life. And boy does he set it on fire!

Wickedly handsome, highly protective, cunning, fierce, loyal, forceful, playful, intense, and willing to die for her, Chloe finds a “dog” worth howling about. Actually, he’s the one howling, and he’s no dog. He’s a wolf to be reckoned with. When she discovers he’s a purebred werewolf, her world is never the same.

He will do anything, and I mean anything (can’t share a spoiler) to protect Chloe. Some readers have been a bit disturbed by that “anything.” I thought we should ask Zane himself why he did what he did, and what he finds so appealing about Chloe Carpenter. Join me?

Above: Zane Marshall in human form.

Zane, your motive weren’t exactly pure when you first met Chloe. When did you know it was going to be more than “business” with her?

When she opened her mouth to insult me, I knew. Most women, and please, don’t take this the wrong way, it is what it is. Most women throw themselves at me. I’m not against aggressive women who know what they want, but the fact that Chloe wasn’t one of those women was enticing. My wolf was intrigued as well. He smelled something different and downright delectable in her essence. As a purebred, my emotions tend to be more intense, though I’m very capable of concealing them beneath my hard exterior. She made me feel something I’d never felt before.

About those motives … did you feel guilty at all about what you were doing initially?

No I did not feel guilty at first. Pack protection was my duty and my life. One human, as attractive as she might be, would not deter me from my mission. I believed I could maintain my professional position and still develop a relationship with Chloe. Protecting her was just as important, even in the beginning, as she was critical to our cause. My desire to protect her rapidly became personal, and then I began to feel unsettled by my dishonesty. I am not a liar, but there were a number of situations that honesty had to be delayed due to the life or death nature of the mission.

Speaking of lies and secrets, the big night, and you know the one I’m referring to, required you to make decisions that might seem to some criminal. Explain yourself.

I don’t owe anyone an explanation except Chloe. What I did I’d do again if it ensured her safekeeping. I was willing to look like a monster if it kept her alive and well. I would have died, and still would in order to protect her. This may sound harsh, but disapproval from you or anyone else is meaningless in the big scheme of things. The one I hated to hurt was the one I was determined to protect. I encourage people to finish the story before passing judgment on what they think happened between me and Chloe.

What makes a woman attractive to you, Zane?

Let’s be real, initially, men are all drawn to something physical, whether it’s a woman’s eyes, hair, lips, breasts, legs … you get the picture. But there are plenty of sexy and attractive women in the world. For most guys, Rhonda would be more than enough woman to keep up with. In my case, I found her to be cheap, tacky, and fake. Chloe was real. Her beauty was natural. The fact that she is exotically multiracial really appealed to me. She is so unique and fresh. Sexy and feisty. I found her many contrasts impossible to resist. Yes, I know, she’s a spitfire, kept secrets (don’t we all), and had a hell of a hard time making up her mind about me, but that made our developing relationship that much more exciting. I wanted to be the man who tamed that little hellcat. My big bad wolf refused to be denied. I’m off topic here … she does that to me. (soft, sexy chuckle). Attraction for me involves the total package. Is she someone I can enjoy being with in every way. Someday we all lose our sexiness to some degree. Will I still want to spend time with a specific female once all the physical lures have been exhausted, for whatever reason? Unfortunately, though, as a purebred, I can love everything about a woman, if the fates don’t match us as mates, there is no hope for a permanent relationship.

Thanks Zane!

Anytime. (wink) He strides away making my toes curl. Yummy! He can shed fur at my place anything. Too bad he’s been snagged.

Choe is one lucky girl. If you want to learn more about Zane Marshall and all his sexiness, secrets, and why he fell so hard for Chloe, you’ll have to read their story in I Kissed a Dog and in the upcoming She Kissed a Vampire.

Until next time …

Review
I was initially drawn to this book for it's catchy title. I am so glad I got my hands on this little beauty. I was completely mesmerized with the story and a certain sexy alpha male. Carol Van Atta has a major hit on her hands with I Kissed A Dog!

Chloe Carpenter is not your average woman. She has the ability to communicate with animals. I love this about her. She uses her skills to help injured or traumatized animals at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park. Chloe is funny and a bit sarcastic, which I find to be great qualities in a leading lady. She also makes me laugh at her lack of gracefulness at the most inopportune times, sometimes leading to life threatening situations. Thank goodness for her gorgeous savior Zane.

Zane Marshall is the new veterinarian at the wildlife park. He's sexy, confident and completely gets under Chloe's skin. He is also a werewolf that is working undercover to find out who is murdering young men in the area. I instantly swooned over Zane. He is purely masculine with a sensual animal magnitism that drives me wild. I couldn't get enough of him!

"Why did Zane have to be drop dead gorgeous wearing Levis that hugged his muscular legs? I'm a leg girl. Powerul legs and a tight bum were a major turn on. His presence gave me heartburn. It looked like I'd have to invest in some strong antacids." This quote says it all.

I am completely captivated by the story of Chloe and Zane. In this book I get bits of all my favorite supernatural creatures. Werewolves, Vampires, Mutants and hints at more possibilities in the series. I have to warn you, once you start reading you won't want to put it down. I felt like screaming because I didn't want the book to end. I need more!! I can't wait for book 2. I Kissed A Dog is a book I highly recommend.

Tour Stop / The Haret by Denise Daisy

 Title: The Haret
Author: Denise Daisy
Presented by Nevermore PR
Length: 252 Pages

  Why an Author?

One of my favorite quotes is from Donald Miller. He says, “It the way you live your life won’t make a story meaningful then it won’t make a life meaningful either.”

I became an author because I love telling stories and I love to motivate. My books are all suspense thrillers with a touch of supernatural fantasy woven in among the romance and spine tingling chills. They are exciting page turners to say the least but they are also words that make you stop and think about your own life. Several of my readers have said my books have them on the edge of their seats, laughing out loud one minute, crying the next and stopping to ponder their own life. I love that. In my book The Haret my main character Felicitas is having an argument with her mother. At one point she asks her mom, “When did you lose your wonder?” I noticed that quote was listed on Goodreads as someone’s favorite quote. That made my day…someone somewhere is contemplating if they have lost their wonder and if they have, I hope they work at discovering it again. I write because I love to entertain, to transport you to a world beyond the boundaries of this life. To show you excitement and thrills all while discovering great truths mixed in with unconditional love. Hopefully you can live vicariously through my characters and translate some of what they learn into your own life and before your own personal story ends…you will realize how very meaningful your life truly is..

Blurb

Felicitas’ life is thrown into chaos when she begins to have dreams of Raine Zadock. Not only has she never met him, but the intimate night in her dreams shows a positive result on her pregnancy test. She doesn’t dare tell her controlling father, Melvin Rebold, the town’s most prominent Baptist minister or her passive mother Sharon. The only person she can confide in is her grandmother Rosie, however her father forbids her to have anything to do with her, claiming she’s insane and speaks with the dead. But, before Felicitas can confess her secret, she mysteriously vanishes. During the search to find her, news of her pregnancy surfaces along with a cryptic Nocturnal Journal that cast an accusing finger on a secretive stranger.

A week later, she is found wandering the woods but with no memory of where she has been. An angry Detective, her boyfriend and her parents are furious with her and of course do not believe her story of becoming pregnant in a dream.

After her father threatens to send her off to County Mental Health, she runs away to her grandmother’s house, all the while haunted by her father’s continual warnings about the woman. True to her father’s description, Rosie seems a bit eccentric and shares wild mystical tales of dreams and other dimensions. Together Felicitas and her grandmother trace their roots back ten generations and make a disturbing discovery that someone very close to her is not who they seem.
